As you mourn the passing of someone you love, we want to assure you, first of all, that you're not alone. We would like to accompany you throughout this process, provide support, and help you with any decisions you will need to make. Second, please know that you have options when it comes to honoring someone's final wishes and arranging religious services after death. If you're working with a licensed funeral home or funeral director, you have probably been offered at least some of these options already. Our pastor and staff are happy to assist you as well - including praying with you after a loved one has died, answering questions, and more. The following guide offers a brief overview that is meant to prepare for or supplement your conversations with funeral directors and parish leaders.
If all you need are the Scripture readings and Universal Prayer samples for a funeral/memorial Mass, they are here:If you're working with a funeral director, you probably won't need to also contact the church or cemetery yourself. Funeral directors will usually do that for you to make the initial arrangements. They will also help you to prepare and publish an obituary, which serves as a public announcement of death and any services which may be attended by anyone wishing to pay their respects. Please be aware that, while funeral directors know how to coordinate with Catholic clergy and parish staff, they don't usually have our expertise in understanding all of the religious options, including what is and is not permitted.
